Know dengue, prevent it early

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. There is no specific antiviral, so recognising warning signs and timely fluid management save lives.

Key facts

  • Phases: febrile (days 1 to 3), critical (days 3 to 7, when the fever may drop but plasma leakage can occur) and recovery (days 7 to 10).
  • Warning signs: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums or nose, vomiting blood or black stools, lethargy or restlessness, cold clammy limbs, difficulty breathing, no urine for 4 to 6 hours.
  • Prevention (PSN 3M Plus): drain and scrub water containers weekly, cover water storage, recycle items that collect rainwater, plus repellent, bed nets and larva-eating fish.
  • In Indonesia, call 119 for medical emergencies.
